Rodents- BAH!

I don’t INTEND to feed them constantly. My goal is to feed the BIRDS. We’ve been enjoying all the birds coming to my yard, including some beautiful cardinals and chickadees!

But apparently, the squirrels have discovered the feast that is in my bird feeder. I filled up the feeder three days ago, and now it’s bone dry! Unbelievable! I thought perhaps we had an influx of hungry birds, but my son said, “Oh no; I saw the squirrels dumping seed all over the ground so they could get to it.”

From what I hear, squirrels are almost IMPOSSIBLE to deter from bird seed feeders. The only solution is to get a squirrel-proof feeder. *sigh*

Well, it’s a good thing I like Buy.com so muchand they always have stuff on sale. I spotted this nice feeder for $32 at Buy.com. It’s called the Heritage Farms Birds’ Choice Squirrel Proof Feeder! How’s that for a name. And it’s birds’ choice! lol. I like the old-fashioned green paint color. That would match my house and yard perfectly. It looks pretty high-tech! What do you think? Think it’ll be the birds’ choice? It had better not be squirrel’s choice! Next thing you know, I’ll have to get an air siren to scatter all the dang rodents and deer that are infiltrating my yard! SHEESH!

We recently got a beautiful bird feeder. Believe it or not– this is my FIRST bird feeder, ever! I’ve lived at this house for over ten years, and never bothered to get Bird Feeders for the property. Sad, I know. Well, I have redeemed myself and today the kids and I installed our first feeder! It’s the Garden Sip & Seed Bird Feeder. It’s a very classy bird feeder. I don’t think it is squirrel-proof, though. Being squirrel-proof is a rather important feature for us, because we have a LOT of squirrels around here, and they have a mean streak in them. Well, read on to learn more about the feeder and we’ll see how it performs….

Isn’t it pretty? The Garden Sip & Seed Bird Feeder comes with two “silos” and they have small openings at the bottom, for the seed and water to come out. The feeders are plastic with heavy plastic tops and bottoms in a copper finish. It’s very unique. It costs about $40 at BirdFeeders.com, and you can find it here. We decided to fill both silos up with seed and not water. It’s below zero here and the water would freeze. If the birds are thirsty, they can eat snow. haha!

We took a short video of us setting it up and hanging it outside. We’re quite proud of our little home movie. Watch and see how it works!

The weather has been bad this week, icy rain and horribly windy. So I haven’t seen any birds at the feeder yet (it would help if I checked more frequently, too). No squirrels with machine guns yet, either!

Good heavens, with the snow here now (see previous post), I’m remembering all these things I have to do before winter!! I think our lawn mower is still in the garage, and the show shovels are buried in the shed. And we have a few very wimpy bird houses and feeders that won’t survive the winter unless I pull them all in. We’ve been trying to attract birds (NOT crows, HATE those things!) to help us in our gardening efforts during the summer. We have way too many crows and starlings, and they are dirty and destructive.

So the kids and I have been creating “songbird-friendly” environments for the little critters. Last year we had some lovely cardinals, purple martins, and hummingbirds in the backyard! The chickadees do stay the winter here, but they’ve been finding tastier treats at the neighbor’s house. Hm, we may have a neighborhood bird-feeder war going on around here…

We’ve had to transition from “regular” bird feeders to a fancy squirrel-proof bird feeder. I can’t believe the number of squirrels we have here. And they have ravenous appetites. So either we surround our feeder with machine guns and barbed wire, or we have to have a special anti-squirrel feeder. Else the birds will starve and the squirrels will gorge. I have yet to see any squirrel share his stash, too.

How about you? Do you feed the birds in the winter? Or.. just the squirrels?
