Dishwashers With Too Many Buttons
Posted on 09. Jan, 2010 by Mrs. Mecomber in kitchen
To keep the budget very trim for our kitchen renovation, I’m going to stick with the appliances I have. They are older, but are in good shape and I see no need to waste money on new ones when I am in desperate need of new plumbing and electrical! I’m at the point right now where I DON’T CARE whether I can afford new cabinets– I’ll use tables and stack dishes on those! But I MUST have new plumbing, electrical, and insulation. My kitchen is so unworkable that modern electricity, proper lighting, and a drain that works is luxury to me!!
One appliance I will make room for is a dishwasher. For a time, I was washing dishes by hand for TEN people, three times a day. It was pretty rough, especially with my plumbing the way it is! I have longed for a dishwasher for many years, and I hope to get one this time.
So I’m looking around at dishwashers. I haven’t operated one since I was a girl, for (OMG) 28 years!!!! Yes, people, THAT’S how long I’ve been starved for a dishwasher! That was back in the days when we read books, walked to the library or school, and used a corded rotary phone to talk to people. Wow. I feel so old.
Anyway, the “new” models puzzle me. Must they be so complex? I remember when dishwashers had three settings: wash, rinse, dry. I don’t know where to begin with these new-fangled monsters. I don’t even think I can read such tiny print anymore. Look at all those choices!
Whoa.
That monster looks like it also cooks eggs, will do my banking, and provide my life insurance lead. Hm, on second thought, maybe it’s not too bad…. haha
Seriously– do you ladies with dishwashers have these kinds with all the buttons? Do you make use of all those buttons and doodads? I’m a simple lady with simple needs. How many different ways can a dish be washed, anyway? Are the more complicated dishwashers truly better than the “wash, rinse, dry” models? Things sure have changed in 30 years….

Funny! Even though I am a real techie and use many of the latest tools in life and online, when it come to appliances, I like simple. We bought the simple models of washer and dryer and still they have at least 10 settings each that are never used. Our dishwasher is 12 years old, has done thousands of loads, and has a multitude of different settings. I don’t think it has ever been run on anything other that “normal” with “air dry”.

I have a Bosch SHE44C02UC that has a lot less buttons on it than the one pictured. It has on/off, power scrub, reguular wash, quick wash, rinse & hold with indicators for cycle countdown, refill rinse agent and sanitized. It is energy star qualified as well. I love it! You can’t go wrong with a Bosch as they have the highest eoc-friendly and energy efficient specs there are. They are the best on the market in this respect. You should still be able to find a Bosch with a lot less buttons as I’ve only had mine just a little over 2 years.

Hubby and I were just noticing that same thing with the dishwashers. We were wasting time in Best Buy yesterday before taking our daughter to the airport. I sure could spend a lot of money in the appliance department.

@ Mom’s cafe. Thanks for that. We had looked at a Bosch and liked it. But researching it online found LOTS of complaints about quality and reliability. We have not decided yet, though. Having the web to research is great, but often the people who post are the ones with trouble so you can get a slanted sampling.

@Will, you’re welcome. I really like my Bosch and have no complaints. If it is of any help one of our kids had a Bosch about 4 years before we bought ours. The just sold that house, moved on a Friday and had new Bosch installed on the Saturday! Apparently their model is supposed to be even more energy efficient. With our rising electricity rates that’s going to become an ever greater factor.

Hmmm. The number of buttons on my dishwasher depends on what clothes he’s wearing for the day.
My 13 yo is the current dishwasher for the 10 of us. And, yes, we are very much wishing for one of them there appliance things!
I’m jealous on the kitchen redo! My laminate may not be bright orange, but it’s in similar shape. I’m also missing cabinets, and the flooring looks like the laminate on your counter top. However, it IS a kitchen, and it DOES turn out about 21 meals a week for 10 people!
