Update on TempurPedic Noisy Foundation

This is a continuing saga… you can read my first review of our TempurPedic mattress and foundation set here, and then the problem with the horribly squeaky foundation here, and then the story about getting the replacement here.

Split Foundation

Whew! This entire story is almost a year old ! OK… To backtrack: In October 2008, we paid over $1000 for a TempurPedic queen-size mattress and foundation set, to help my back (herniated disks). The mattress has been WONDERFUL for my back. But in January 2009, the foundation started to squeak. REALLY LOUDLY. I mean, fingernails on chalkboard kind of noise here. I procrastinated for a few months, but finally called the furniture store and got a replacement foundation set in April 2009. In May– two weeks later- the squeaking started up AGAIN! Since writing about this issue on this blog, I’ve received dozens of similar complaints by other TempurPedic customers. The mattress is really great, but the foundation STINKS.

So today, after procrastinating a few weeks, I called the corporate office of TempurPedic in Lexington, Kentucky. The number is 800-821-6621. The lady I spoke with was exceptionally courteous and helpful. After explaining my situation, she said that TempurPedic has recently come out with a new and improved foundation set design, and they will be happy to replace my foundation, free of charge, according to my warranty terms. I had to write a letter including my name, address, phone number, and state the reason for my claim. I also had to make a copy of my sales receipt, and send it to the Lexington office. From there, it may take 2-4 weeks to process the warranty… but they will call me when they have processed it and within 24-48 hours after that, I should be getting my new foundation set, free of charge.

This was good news! I quickly typed up the letter to go out into today’s mail. I will post an update here when I get one.

Doing some research on the web, I see that a lot of people have problems with the squeaky foundation set. Many of them have requested exchanges for new ones, only to experience (as I did) that the noise returns within a few weeks. I am convinced that this issue is caused by a defect in the design of the foundation. Problem is, I’m stuck with using the TempurPedic foundation– if I build my own flat bed (which I have been very tempted to do), then I void my warranty on the mattress. I don’t want to do that. I’m really hoping that this “new and improved” foundation is the solution for our woes.

So that’s my update. I hope this is helpful to you! I’ll have more news when I get it.

WOW! I’m so glad you’re getting some sort of resolution and sorry you had to go through all of this. I’ll be anxious to hear that you finally get the new foundation!

I looked into getting a temperpedic mattress once. I myself didn’t like it, most because I like firm mattresses, but I hear it is great for back problems.

At least they are helpful in trying to fix the issue, recently I had problems with a mattress and the company pretty much told me so sad, we don’t care.

Hopefully the new one works better/quieter.

I was wondering, has this issue been resolved? I couldn’t find a more recent update than this one. I am having the same issue, and I just received the claim forms from Tempurpedic. I am wondering if the “new and improved” foundations are the fix I’m looking for before I spend any time/money to replace the one I have. Thanks!

Ugh. That is what I was afraid of. The store I bought mine from 3 years ago is now out of business. The manufacturer said I would be responsible for all shipping charges to get the new foundation. I think I’m just going to put it in the garage, buy a new one, and if the mattress ever fails, I’ll put the Tempurpedic one back on, take the pictures, and pretend I used it all along. This REALLY infuriates me. We bought the top of the line set and paid almost $2,500 for it. The King size. And this happens. The mattresses are great but those foundations are worthless. Thanks for the update, Monica.

Update to my previous post: Contacted Tempurpedic and they said I needed my original receipt. I have my AMEX statement which shows when I bought it, but I’ve moved twice and couldn’t find the original store one and the store is now out of business, so they said there was nothing they could do. Okay. I could’ve fought it, but after doing a lot of research I decided to fix it instead of having them replace it only to have to go through it again. Besides, I was told I’d have to pay for the shipping since I can’t go to the original store and pick it up, and I’d have to dispose of the foundation that is squeaking. HASSLE. So anyway, I researched how to fix it. It is so easy! I took the dust cover off the bottom of the foundation and took an old bed sheet and slid it between the wood slats and the cardboard, pulled out a couple of staples that had worked their way loose, tucked it well under all the sides and put the dust cover back on, stapled it in place, put it back on the bed and NO MORE NOISE!! I am so happy! I will report back if it works long term or not. Thanks for this blog. It helped me a lot.

This is great advice (above) – stick an old bed sheet along the sides of the foundations, between the cardboard and the wood. Solves the squeaking problem.

I was shocked to see how many have had this issue. For the longest time we had no idea until the cause was until my husband began looking
At comments. I purchased ours direct from the company so hopefully won’t have a hassle. For the price of this bed, it’s disgusting they can’t make a decent foundation. I loved the idea of the sheet trick between the “cardboard” (unbelievable) and no more noise. Wow that was expensive cardboard! Wish me luck in my endeavor!

WOW…I spent the kind of $$$ I did for my Cal-King Tempurpedic and I also got the squeaky box springs. You would think a company that has been around as long as TP, would improve their system. They apparently don’t care once you walk out of the store with that $3,000 + bed to honor any type of warranty.

Our problem was our bed frame made the bed extra tall, almost hard to get into. We were looking at modifying our bed frame, thinking the noise was coming from the wood frame rubbing the box springs (foundation). An easier solution to both problems….the height of the bed and squeaky box springs is to not use the box springs at all. We will construct braces/supports out of 2X4′s to go across the bed frame, and top that with plywood cut to fit. So that the box springs/foundations isn’t a total loss (how do you sell defective bed parts to someone else), I am removing the cover with the famed Tempurpedic logo and using it to cover the plywood where it touches the mattress. Yes, I may void the warranty, but from what I read it is a royal pain to get them to honor it anyways!!!!!

Best mattress we have ever slept on….but the foundation/box springs really suck.

Our tempupedic box spring also squeaks loudly.

I called tempurpedic and they said they would replace the set if I could find the receipt. Unfortunately, I cannot and they do not keep track of their customer base.
