To those who expressed curiosity about out latest “pet,” we’ve discovered it’s just a common garter snake.
My son has named him “Marshall” because we found him in the swampy area of the yard.
It’s only the second snake we’ve ever seen here on our property. I wish the things would eat all the Japanese beetles we’ve been seeing this year. Those durn bugs are everywhere. Must be due to the soggy summer we’ve had. They’ve chewed up part of my little oak tree.
Well, anyway, the snake is not poisonous, and for now, he’s a curiosity to the children. We’ll have to let him go pretty soon.

I love Marshall! But…how does your son know he is not a Marsha instead? We have a black snake who lives in our yard. I don’t know why i call her a ’she’ as I really haven’t inquired as to whether it was a Mr. or a Miss/Mrs. I did learn that in my area at least, if you have one of the particular black snakes, it means you won’t get a poisonous one in your hard because they and the poisonous ones are territorial and enemies of eachother…
