One Man’s Junk…

Here’s an interesting concept: iSold It! I’ve been trying, on and off, to sell the old electrical insulators and conductors that I salvaged from the living room, when we gutted it.

I’d heard that these old things were valuable. They are originals– I’d guess they date back to the 1930s or so. They still work, too! But eBay has been a dismal failure for me. I think their fees are out-of-this-world, and because they are so impersonal, there are just too many scams.

iSoldit, however, looks very interesting to me. Has anyone tried it? They have numerous locations across the United States. You drop off your stuff and do all the eBay selling dirty work! I hate selling stuff online, it’s just a real pain and I have found that a “small time” seller like me cannot compete with the big dogs out there. I think iSoldit is a great idea!

Basically, what you do is find a dealer nearest you, and take your stuff there. iSoldit researches the stuff and gives you an idea of its value (an excellent, excellent service! it’s practically a free appraisal!). They take the photos, they do the listing. They take any requests you may have, give you a receipt, and it’s up for auction!

Once your stuff is listed, iSoldit emails you the active auction link, so you can watch everyone in the world excitedly bid on your stuff! Woo! When the item sells, iSoldit collects the payment and ships out your stuff to the buyer. When everything is done, you get a check payment. Or, iSoldit will send the profit to a charity of your choice. Nice!

I think this is a wonderful tool for small-time folks like me, who don’t want to deal with the hassle of appraisal, eBay listings fine print, piddling eBay fees, and shipping, and etc. It also helps remove the question of how much stuff is valued. I have really no idea how much to offer for my insulators and conductors (and other things we have salvaged around here). This is an enormous help.

I’m interested in what you think, if you have tried this. Please let me know. Thanks!
