In late January, Upstate New York usually has a January thaw. At this time, the temperatures rise to the 30s during the day; extreme thaws host temperatures in the 40s.
It was almost 70 degrees here a few days ago! Our January Thaw is three weeks early, and we haven’t even had real winter yet (only two good snowstorms with less than 8 inches each).
This is what my secret garden looks like today.
Look at these photos for what it looked like two weeks previously. Incredible!
By the way, that’s what our half-completed walkway looks like. I used the Quikrete concrete walkway form that the kids got me for my birthday. I’ll put up a post all about it in the near future. Doing it was so easy and so much fun!
This is all that is left of the snow.

I’ve thought about getting on of those forms but haven’t yet. I’ll be curious to see if you have trouble with heaving through the winer and spring.

ahhh, so I’m the guinea pig, eh?
Yes, I did wonder about frost heave myself… but I don’t care, lol. Before we had the concrete forms, I’d set in large rocks that I’f found around the place. They did heave. It doesn’t help that this part of the yard is the soggiest. But I don’t care if they heave a lot. This is a quiet area, away from the main doors, and I don’t mind it if it has that “well worn” look.
The walkway is not anywhere nearly done. I have to finish the job, plus lay a good couple of inches around the walkway to build it up a little. and then I have to lay sand in between the gaps. Lots to do… I’ll keep you posted.
